SLU HISTORY PROFESSOR TO WRITE NEW BOOK ON LOUISIANA HISTORY
     HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University history professor Michael Kurtz will
write a new book on the history of Louisiana since Huey and Earl Long for a new series
commemorating the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase.
     Kurtz, a nationally-recognized expert on the Kennedy assassination, is the author of the
best-selling book "Crime of the Century: The Kennedy Assassination from a Historian's
Perspective" and co-author of the Pulitzer Prize nominated biography "Earl K. Long: The Saga of
Uncle Earl and Louisiana Politics." 
     In addition, Kurtz has written numerous scholarly articles and essays on Louisiana and
modern American history for major academic journals and anthologies, including the widely
used textbook "Louisiana: A History." He received the university president's award for
excellence in research in 1984 and teaching in 1992.
     Kurtz's new book, to be published by the University of Southwestern Louisiana's Center
for Louisiana Studies, will is part of a new series exploring various aspects of Louisiana history
from colonial times to the present.
