SLU LITERACY CONFERENCE OFFERS TEACHERS "BREATH OF FRESH AIR"
     HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's April 18 literacy conference will
give area teachers "a breath of fresh air for their classrooms" by showing them how to integrate
the arts into their lesson plans.
     The conference,   Pulling the Pieces Together Creatively -- Integrating the Arts into the
Curriculum,  is scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon in the Cate Teacher Education Center Kiva. 
     Keynote speaker, Kimberlye Hunicke, an art supervisor in the New Orleans public
schools and executive director of the Louisiana Institute for the Arts in Education, will bring her
23 years of teaching experience to the conference with her topic  Literacy in the New
Millennium Includes Arts Education.  Hunicke heads one of the nationally recognized
demonstration arts program, Arts Connection, which places professional artist/teachers in
schools. She was also one of the original dance artists in the Orleans Parish schools. 
     Southeastern professors and teachers from Tangipahoa and St. Tammany parishes also
will offer special sessions highlighting creative strategies for addressing state content standards. 
     Sessions topics include  POW! Using the Arts for Greater Empowerment,  by Lucienne
Simon of Hammond Eastside Primary;  Integrating Drawings with Historical Characters,  by
Anna Haldane of  Mandeville Middle School;  Music and Math,  by Janet Holden of Hammond
Eastside Primary;  Science + Dance + Children s Literature,  by Cynthia  Tricou and Martie
Fellom of Southeastern;  Literature, Writing, Math and History,  by Beverly Gremillion of Lyon
Elementary in Covington and  Exploring Art Through Children s Literature,  by Sedley Brown
and Kristy Bardy of Covington Elementary.
     The conference's fee is $10 for early registration by April 3 and $15 for late registration.
Southeastern faculty and students pay a $5 fee. For more information or a registration form,
