HAMMOND -- The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will present a special matinee performance tailored for families on Sunday, Sept. 22, at Southeastern Louisiana University’s Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts. The 3 p.m. concert, part of LPO’s Family Discovery series, will feature the LPO’s performance of “Vivladi’s Ring of Mystery,” presented by Classical Kids. Tickets, available at the Columbia box office (985-543-4371) at 220 East Thomas Street, are $30, orchestra I; $25, orchestra II and balcony I, and $20, balcony II. Box office hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tickets can also be ordered online at ticketweb.com. The Vivaldi Ring of Mystery Symphony Concert is based on the Classical Kids recording, a series of award-winning recordings originated by Susan Hammond and designed to introduce children to classical music. Hammond, a former concert pianist, music teacher and mother of two, produced her first recording, “Mr. Bach Comes to Call,” in 1988. “Vivaldi's Ring of Mystery” tells the story of a gifted young orphan named Katarina, performed by Canadian born singer-actor Kelly Campbell. Katarina is sent to study music at the Pieta orphanage in Venice. There, she comes under the tutelage of the famous music director and composer Antonio Vivaldi, who will be portrayed by Derek Boyes. In addition to learning from a great composer, Katarina is befriended by Giovanni, a colourful gondolier. With his help, she searches through the thrilling but mysterious atmosphere of Carnival and the Island of the Dead for clues to her past and a vanishing Stradivarius violin. In a touching final scene, a masked stranger (Boyes) unites Katarina with her family, and she must choose between staying with Vivaldi and her music or going out into the world.
