THIRTY FIVE AREA TEACHERS PARTICIPATE IN PROJECT "M CUBED" AT SLU

HAMMOND -- Thirty five math teachers from sixteen area schools participated in
Southeastern's Meaningful Math for Middle Schools (M3) summer program.
Teachers from Washington, St. Helena, Livingston, Tangipahoa, St. Tammany Parishes
as well as the Bogalusa City School System worked with Southeastern faculty in the Math and
Teacher Education departments on math content including statistics, number systems and
number sense, algebra and geometry as well as the use of technology and problem solving
strategies.
Project M3 is supported by a Louisiana Systemic Initiative(LaSIP) grant. During the four
week summer program teachers come to campus to investigate ways to make both the math
content and activities more meaningful in their classrooms. "We take some very good teachers
and make them more aware of innovative techniques," said Susan Jenkins one of the project
coordinators. "Attitudes about math and science are being changed by these reforms and students
have more hands on learning and more effective learning."
The participants also investigated the National Council of Mathematics Standards and the
Louisiana Mathematics Framework for ideas, and worked in the math technical center exploring
computer applications and ways of integrating technology into the classroom. Follow up
activities are planned for the 1997-98 school year.
Pat Taucer of Lacombe is the site coordinator for the project. SLU faculty members Joe
Walsh, teacher education and Susan Jenkins, math are co-directors. Project staff included SLU
math professors Tena Golding, Charlotte Steward and Pat Mitchell and Teaching Scholar, Sherry
Beale.
