SLU'S "MAJORITY RULES" ALCOHOL AWARENESS PROGRAM
GETS NATIONAL RECOGNITION
HAMMOND -- "Majority Rules," a special Southeastern Louisiana University program
focusing on alcohol awareness, has been listed as an "innovative program" by the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"It has been a few years since a Louisiana program has been acknowledged," said Jamie
Barth of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. "Keep up the good work."
The Majority Rules campaign was presented during National Collegiate Alcohol
Awareness Week, Oct. 19-23, 1998.
The Majority Rules campaign was presented during National Collegiate Alcohol
Awareness Week, Oct. 19-23, 1998. Organized by the Division of Student Affairs, the goal of the
program, which blended education, awareness and fun, was to get students to understand the use
and abuse of alcohol. The program was coordinated by Jim McHodgkins, assistant dean of
student development, and Amy Livingston of DSA's Office of Program Development and
Evaluation.
The week's highlights included a "reverse town hall meeting," a powerful talk on the
consequences of alcohol abuse by Mississippi State Trooper Pete Collins; and "Mocktails," a
non-alcoholic drink mixing competition.
