SLU MATH STUDENTS SWEEP MATH COMPETITION
     HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University mathematics students swept the
student paper competition at the Louisiana-Mississippi Mathematics Association of America
annual meeting at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, March 1-2.   
     The students, whose work was directed by members of the Southeastern Mathematics
Department faculty, took first, second, third and honorable mention honors at the annual
meeting.
Their research was supported by grants from the College of Arts and Sciences' Office of Student
Creative Activities and Research (OSCAR).
     The students, their awards, papers, and supervising professors were:
       Cadence Ellington of Hammond, first place, "The Distance Between a Point and a Line
Using Different Norms," Dennis Merino. 
       Loretta George of Independence, second place, "The Locus of the Center of Gravity of
Variable Plane Regions," Tilak deAlwis.
       John Pierce of Covington, third place,  "Exploring the Center of Gravity of Exponential
and Logarithmic Regions," de Alwis.
       Daniel Bankston of Covington, honorable mention, "Hyperbolic Geometry and
Transformations," Edgar Reyes.
