SLU PROFESSOR GETS CDC APPOINTMENT
Editors: Photo accompanies release
HAMMOND -- Millie Naquin, an associate professor of Kinesiology and Health Studies
at Southeastern Louisiana University, has been appointed to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention's Division of Adolescent and School Health. Naquin, a resident of Thibodaux, will be
assigned to the CDC in Atlanta for one to two years, beginning in September.
The CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health ensures that students in all grades
receive effective health programs designed to prevent risk behaviors that can lead to today's
major killers, such as heart disease, cancer, AIDs, and injuries.
Naquin will lead the division initiative focusing on effective health education and
promotion efforts for post-secondary students, particularly those in high-risk situations. She will
organize and coordinate efforts to support post-secondary health promotion programs,
pre-service education for professionals to help young people avoid HIV infection and other
serious health problems, and community-wide programs to build partnerships with schools,
public health agencies, non-governmental agencies and other important institutions that serve
children and youth.
The CDC said Naquin was selected because of her extensive experience in a variety of
university settings and her experience in developing collaborative community-school projects.
She is associate director of training for the Southeastern's Excellence in Health and Education
(EHEP) project, a collaborative effort supported by Louisiana's Department of Education and
Office of Public Health, and other agencies.
EHEP forges local, regional and statewide partnerships to enhance health and quality of
life, provides state-of-the-art teaching and learning opportunities for health educators, and offers
research and evaluation services. It also serves as an advocate for health issues and a
clearinghouse for resources and materials on health education.
Naquin received a bachelor's and master's degrees from Nicholls State University and a
doctoral degree from the University of Maryland. She will take a leave of absence from
Southeastern while working with the CDC.
