SOUTHEASTERN STAGES “MINI” VERSION OF HOMECOMING AT OCT. 30 LIONS-ALCORN GAME
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University will re-stage a “mini” version of some its rain-dampened Homecoming 2004 activities in conjunction with the Lions-Alcorn State football game at Strawberry Stadium on Oct. 30.
“As everyone will remember, Tropical Storm Karl literally rained on our parade and stormed on Strawberry Stadium on Homecoming (Oct. 9),” said Alumni Director Kathy Pittman. “The weather didn’t dampen our spirits, but it did cause us to cancel the Homecoming parade, and, understandably, it caused a number of fans to choose not to get damp themselves!
“So, we have decided to re-stage ‘mini’ versions of some our Homecoming events – such as the court presentation and the parade -- that are just too important and were too greatly anticipated to cancel altogether,” Pittman said.
Members of the 2004 Homecoming court, including Queen Kristen Mannino of Baton Rouge and Arden Ballard of Harahan, will get another moment in the spotlight when they are honored at halftime of the 6 p.m. game. Earlier, at 5:15 p.m., they will also join the Spirit of the Southland marching band, Lionettes, cheerleaders, and other student groups in parading through Friendship Circle from McClimans Hall to Strawberry Stadium.
“Consider it our ‘second chance-second line’ Homecoming parade,” Pittman said, laughing.
Another Homecoming rain-out back on the schedule is the dedication of a marker on the site of Hammond Hall, one of several residence halls that have been demolished to make way for new student housing. The brief dedication is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. at the corner of General Pershing and Texas Ave.
Tailgating fun in Friendship Circle, beginning at 3 p.m., will include a variety of children’s activities such as a spacewalk, interactive games, a clown, face painting, and a fire truck. Entertainment will include a bagpipe player, a community country market, and music by the popular band Four Unplugged.
Southeastern Athletics plans special promotions for students beginning with pre-game activities and continuing throughout halftime and quarter breaks in the gridiron action. The events include a costume contest, a drawing for a color television set, a “Pass for Cash” contest. Members of the 2004 Southland Conference co-champion Lions men’s basketball team and NCAA award-winning student athletes Shakeita Henfield and Janice Ezegbunam, women’s track and field, and Brett Bergeron, golf, will also be recognized.
