MIRANDO RECEIVES AWARD FOR PAPER
HAMMOND -- Joe Mirando, a member of Southeastern Louisiana University's English
Department faculty, received the Southeast Colloquium award for the best scholarly paper at a
convention of journalism professors in Roanoke, Va., March 14-16.
The Southeast Colloquium is an annual regional convention for members of the
Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. This year's event was hosted
by Virginia Tech University and Washington & Lee University.
Mirando's paper was chosen as the best among 40 history division papers that were
submitted to the refereed competition by journalism professors and graduate students from across
the South. His paper, "Confronting the Bohemian Image," consisted of an analysis of how
college journalism textbooks have described the role of news reporters and editors in society. He
analyzed more than 300 textbooks published since 1867.
Two of the judges for the competition called the paper "fascinating," and another judge
remarked that it was a "good paper for all that teach journalism to review what is being taught
and portrayed in classrooms."
Mirando has been an SLU faculty members since 1982. He is a former newspaper
reporter and received a doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992. He resides
in Ponchatoula and is a native of Elmira, N.Y.
