SEVEN STUDENTS VIE FOR MISS SOUTHEASTERN CROWN
     HAMMOND -- Jessica Marie Young, Miss Southeastern 2001, will crown her successor,
one of seven contestants in the annual Southeastern Louisiana University Pageant, scheduled for
7 p.m., February 21, at the newly renovated Columbia Theater for the Performing Arts in
downtown Hammond.
     Held at Southeastern since 1949, the pageant has been a Miss America preliminary since
1962.  The pageant is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board. Admission is free.
     The theme of the 2002 Pageant is "Paws for Pride," said pageant Executive Director
Jackie Dale Thomas, director of Leadership Development/Student Activities.  
     Emcee for the evening will be Clay Magee of Franklinton. Members of Phi Mu Alpha
Sinfonia Music Fraternity will perform Southeastern's alma mater and entertainment also will be
provided by the a capella singing group, "4 EVA 1."
     Young, the daughter of Beverly Young and David Young of Franklinton, will graduate
with honors in May in elementary education. She has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point
average.
     Contestants for the 2002 title are sophomore communications major Kay Nunmaker of
Covington, junior psychology major Heather McLain of Husser, senior speech communications
major Chandra Sanders of Prairieville, sophomore psychology major Shannon Brewer of
LaPlace,  sophomore family consumer science major Annie Coats of Springfield, sophomore
elementary education major Angela Pizani of Franklinton and senior nursing major Lindsey
Dykes of Baton Rouge.
     The contestants will compete in four competitions including personal interview,
swimsuit, talent and evening wear.  
     Miss Southeastern 2002 will advance to the Miss Louisiana Pageant in Monroe on June
15.
