SLU SPONSORS YOUNG MUSICIANS' SUMMER CAMP
HAMMOND -- The fourth annual session of the Southeastern Louisiana University
Young Musicians' Camp, open to pianists, wind instrument or bowed string instrument players,
will be held July 7-18, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. at SLU's Ralph R. Pottle Music Building.
The camp, directed by veteran Southeastern music professor Jerry Voorhees, costs $235
($75 deposit with registration, $160 balance due on July 7). Activities include band, small
ensembles, evening recitals, choral singing, music theory, private lessons, rest periods and
recreation (including swimming at the university pool). Instructors will be university music
professors and students and area music teachers.
Students should have at least half a year's experience on their instrument. Wind students
should have finished the fourth-eighth grades, but not ninth grade. Age and experience
requirements from string or piano players are more flexible.
Dr. Yakov Voldman's SLU Community Music School String Academy will be included in
the camp's offerings. The program is open to young string players who may attend camp during
the morning only. (Older string students may choose to attend all day.) The morning sessions
will
include private and group string instruction, music theory and choral singing. Cost is $100 ($35
deposit). There is a discount for families enrolling more than one child.
The new SLU High School Music Camp under the direction of Director of Bands Frank
Dubuy will share some activities during the Young Musicians' Camp's second week. The new
camp allows students who have outgrown YMC to continue their music camp experiences. For
information, contact Dubuy at 549-2196.
For an application or information, call Voorhees at 549-5089 or 345-4537 or Voldman at
549-2249.
