SLU SHOWS GROWING NUMBER OF NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS
HAMMOND -- In the fall 1997 semester, more than 15,000 students enrolled at
Southeastern Louisiana University, and of those students almost a quarter of them were non-
traditional students, ages 25 and older.
According to Beatrice Baldwin, assistant vice-president for institutional research and
assessment, the average age of a non-traditional student is 32 «-years old. So, the majority of
these students have families, full-time jobs or are just returning to school. Taking these factors
into consideration, Southeastern is making accommodations for each of these needs.
For non-traditional students who have full-time jobs and/or families, Southeastern
offers a variety of evening classes, usually starting between 5 and 7 p.m. There are also early
classes which begin at 7 a.m., ending in enough time for student to go to work. The Colleges of
Business and Education and the Computer Science Department have seen success also in
offering Saturday classes to non-traditional students, which also helps full-time working
students.
Non-traditional students can also take restricted courses that are available only for
students who are 25 years of age and older. According to Academic Services Director, Paul
Riggs, These classes are to put them at ease a little more. Some of the classes restricted to
non-traditional students are mathematics, English and communications, and are designed to help
with the transition back into the classroom.
Also for those non-traditional students who can not make it to the Hammond campus,
there are a variety of classes offered off-campus as well. Off-campus classes are held in East
