SOUTHEASTERN PLANS CAREER DAY FOR BATON ROUGE HIGH SCHOOL
HAMMOND – Students from Southeastern
Louisiana University's School of Nursing will host a nursing career fair
on Thursday, Nov. 11, for students from Glen Oaks High School at Southeastern’s
Baton Rouge Nursing Center.
“Glen Oaks High School has been designated
as a ‘Center of Excellence’ by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System
and serves as a magnet school for high school students interested in the
medical and health professions,” said Southeastern nursing instructor Sandy
MacMurdo. “Many of these students traditionally have not attended college
to become a registered nurse or to earn a bachelor’s degree because they
do not realize the opportunities that await them. The career fair is designed
to show them these opportunities.”
Chosen as a Community Health project
by senior nursing students, the career fair will host 18-20 Glen Oaks juniors
from 9 a.m.-noon. The day’s highlights will include demonstrations and
simulations in nursing skills labs. Southeastern has also partnered with
other area nursing schools to offer information on the many educational
options available in the area. Information will also be readily available
on financial aid and scholarships.
“Events of this nature are part of
our out-reach efforts that we encourage among our students,” said College
of Nursing and Health Sciences Dean Donnie Booth. “It provides our students
an opportunity to participate in hands-on learning activities while also
performing a valuable service to the community.”
Southeastern nursing students coordinating
the fair are Crystal Alack and Travis D’Albor of Hammond; Angela Ard of
Denham Springs; Kelli Black of Plaquemine; Cristin Clement and Blair Lousteau
of Baton Rouge; Debra Glynn of Covington; and Stephanie Linton of Baker.
The students chose the project based on demand for nursing and health care
professionals and data that show individuals in low-income areas have limited
accessibility to higher education.

the nursing career fair, contact MacMurdo at 225-765-2324. |
