SLU WAIVES OUT-OF-STATE TUITION FEES FOR FUTURE TEACHERS
HAMMOND Targeting a looming national shortage of qualified teachers, Southeastern
Louisiana University will award scholarships for out-of-state fees to future teachers.
The fee waiver scholarships, approved by the Board of Supervisors of the University of
Louisiana System in October, will save qualified non-Louisiana teacher education majors as
much as $2,664 dollars in tuition, depending on their course load.
Interim President Randy Moffett said the university will implement the scholarship
program for a two-year trial period beginning with the spring 2002 semester in January.
"When two-thirds of the nation's teachers become eligible for retirement over the next
decade, Louisiana and other states will face a huge workforce crisis," Moffett said. "By
enhancing Southeastern's ability to attract, retain and graduate more teacher education majors,
this tuition waiver scholarship will help address the impending state and national teacher
shortage," Moffett said.
The fee waiver scholarships will be available to non-resident freshmen with a minimum
American College Test (ACT) composite score of 21 or Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT)
score of 970. Transfer students with 30 hours or more must have a 2.5 grade point average and
must have passed the PRAXIS Series, the assessment required by colleges and universities for
entry into teacher education programs.
Students will be eligible for the scholarship as long as they continue to major in education
and meet the university and its College of Education and Human Development's progression and
retention requirements.
Out of state tuition fees range from $888 for students registered for four credit hours to
$2,664 for full-time students taking 12 or more hours. The fees are paid in addition to the

Southeastern has one of the largest and most successful teacher preparation programs in
Louisiana while maintaining strong partnerships with area school systems. The university was
the
first in Louisiana to "guarantee" its teacher graduates to school systems, ensuring that those
teachers know their subject matter, can teach to diverse populations, and can effectively infuse
technology throughout the curriculum. If any graduates fail to meet the criteria, Southeastern
retrains those individuals at its own expense and provides them with a mentor for at least a year.
Martha Head, interim dean of the College of Education and Human Development, said a
number of Southeastern education courses are taught at off-campus locations, including the
university's St. Tammany Center, located on Koop Drive near Abita Springs.
December 1 is the deadline to apply for admission for the spring 2002 semester without
paying a late fee, said Stephen Soutullo, director of academic services. "While the university will
accept applications after the deadline, the non-refundable $20 application fee goes up to $70 after
the deadline," he said.
Students can apply for admission online at www.selu.edu/enroll.
Along with other University of Louisiana system institutions, Southeastern is also
developing a policy to extend the out-of-state tuition waiver to other non-Louisiana residents.
