"WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH" CONTINUES WITH NEW ORLEANS AUTHOR
HAMMOND -- New Orleans author Patty Friedmann will be in the spotlight March 20
as Southeastern Louisiana University continues its celebration of March as Women's History
Month.
Women's History Month and its "Her-Story" lecture series was organized by students
studying women's literature with English professor Carole McAllister. The series includes day
and evening lectures by women from all walks of life and a special art exhibit. Evening lectures
are scheduled for 7 p.m. each Tuesday in the Student Union Theatre, while presentations during
the day are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday at Sims Memorial Library. All events are free and
open to campus and community.
Friedmann, who will speak on "Don't Get Voted Off the Island: Surviving as a Woman
Writer," is the author of four books, Odds, Too Smart to Be Rich, The Exact Image of Mother,
and Eleanor Rushing. She has been a contributor to Newsweek, Brightleaf, the Times-Picayune,
Publishers Weekly, and Small Press Magazine.
Pam Olano of the Neill Corporation will be the final Women's History Month evening
speaker on March 27.
A special exhibit, "Women's Themes," featuring works by artists Kim Finley-Stansbury,
Susan Wingard and Janet Urrate opened at Sims Memorial Library on March 13 and will
continue through March 27.
The daytime lecture schedule, which features members of the Southeastern faculty,
continues on March 15, when foreign languages professor Margaret Gonzalez-Perez will speak
on "Women in Developing Nations." Also on the schedule are Judith Fai-Podlipnik, history and
political science, "Women in the Holocaust," March 22; and Kathleen Guidroz, sociology and
criminal justice, "Lipstick and High Heels: How Women Have Been Influenced by the Sexual
Revolution," March 29.
