REPRESENTATIVE POWELL TO DELIVER ANNUAL MORRISON LECTURE
HAMMOND -- State Rep. Henry "Tank" Powell of Ponchatoula, will present
Southeastern Louisiana University's annual "James H. Morrison Lecture on Politics and
Government" at SLU's Music Recital Hall April 28.
The lecture series, sponsored by Southeastern's College of Arts and Sciences, honors
James H. Morrison, the Hammond native who represented Louisiana's Sixth Congressional
District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1943-1967.
Powell's lecture, which is free to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m.
John S. Miller, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said the college conceived the
lecture series three years ago as "an outstanding service event. It was natural," he said, "to name
the lecture series in Congressman Morrison's honor because of his strong connection with
Southeastern." Miller said Powell's remarks will focus on solutions to problems in Louisiana
education.
Morrison has donated his Congressional papers, consisting of approximately 200 boxes
of materials, to Southeastern's Archives and Special Collections. His extensive photographic
collection from his 11 terms in Washington, D.C., as well as his Congressional office
furnishings, are displayed in the Morrison Room in SLU's Linus A. Sims Memorial Library.
Powell, a Ponchatoula resident for 26 years and a 1968 Southeastern graduate, was
elected as Representative of District 73 in 1995. As a member of the House of Representatives,
he sits on the Education, Commerce, and the Labor and Industrial Relations Committees. In his
first year in the Legislature, Powell was honored with the 1996 New Legislator Award by the
Louisiana Federation of Teachers and named Outstanding Rural Caucus Member by the state's
Rural Caucus Committee.
An independent insurance agent, Powell has also been an agent with the Jefferson
Standard Life Insurance Co. and the Prudential Company. He founded the Tangi Life
Underwriters Association, served three terms as its president and was twice chosen the
association's Man of the Year.
Powell and his wife, Kathy Nastasi Powell, have two children and two grandchildren.
