| SOUTHEASTERN LOOKS FORWARD TO FOOTBALL KICK-OFF WITH
“PRACTICE TAILGATE”
HAMMOND – The return of football at Southeastern Louisiana University is still a year away, but the excitement about fielding a team for the first time since 1985 is already building. Southeastern will kick off a new football era on Aug. 30, 2003, when the Lions meet Arkansas-Monticello in Strawberry Stadium. The Southeastern Alumni Association’s Tangipahoa Chapter wants to give Southeastern football fans the opportunity to practice the activity that goes so great with gridiron action – tailgating. The chapter is inviting alumni and university friends to get back in shape for fall football fun by joining in a “Countdown to Kickoff Tailgate Party," scheduled for 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 5. The practice tailgate party will take place in the area just west of the Athletic Building and Strawberry Stadium. The university has unofficially christened the area “Stadium Park.” “Bring your lawn chairs, barbeque grills, picnic baskets, recreation vehicles – and your green and gold spirit,” said Assistant Alumni Director Tom Dawsey. “We’re going to have a great time celebrating the one-year countdown to the Lions’ football kick-off.” Dawsey said tailgaters should reserve their space by contacting Sarah Schillage at the Alumni Center at 985-549-3771 or 1-800-SLU-ALUM. Tailgate 2002 will feature free jambalaya sponsored by the Ag Club alumni chapter, hotdogs, soft drinks, cotton candy and popcorn, Dawsey said. Participants can also enjoy music, door prizes, performances by Southeastern’s Lionettes dance team, and children’s games such as a spacewalk and the Athletic Department’s Cingular Wireless Inflatable Bullpen. They can also meet football head coach Hal Mumme and defensive coordinator Woody Widenhofer and register for a cruise to be given away during Southeastern’s 2002 Homecoming week, Nov. 4-9. For additional information about the Countdown to Kickoff Tailgate Party, call Dawsey at 985-549-2150 or 1-800-SLU-ALUM. |
