SLU MUSIC ENSEMBLES TO PRESENT "PRISM" CONCERT OCT. 8
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana University vocal and instrumental
ensembles will join forces on Sunday, Oct. 8, for the Department of Music and Dramatic Arts'
first "Prism Concert."
The concert, which the department hopes to present each semester, will feature a variety
of faculty and student talent, including performances by the Concert Choir, Chamber Winds,
Faculty Brass Quintet and the new 19-voice Women's Ensemble, said Glen Hemberger, director
of bands.
The free performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Hammond's First United Methodist
Church, 2200 Rue Denise.
Highlighting the program will be a performance of Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the
Common Man" by the Chamber Winds, Pablo Casals' "Nigra Sum" by the Women's Ensemble,
and Ralph Vaugh Williams' "O How Amiable," performed by the Concert Choir and Chamber
Winds.
The Faculty Brass Quintet will present "Divertissement" by James Barnes and "Mood
Indigo" by Duke Ellington. Brass Quintet members are faculty Bryan DePoy, trumpet; Mark
McFarland, horn, and David Johansen, trombone, and students Preston Smith of San Antonio,
Texas, trumpet, and Randy Joyal of Pueblo, Colo., trombone.
Also on the program will be solo performances by freshman euphonium major Jariell
Jackson of Gonzales and graduate voice student Krassen Kragiozov, an international student
from Bulgaria.
"The concert will showcase the diverse musical offerings found within the department in
a program of wide ranging appeal," Hemberger said. Hemberger will conduct the Chamber
Winds, while Dirk Garner, director of choral activities, will conduct the Concert Choir and
Women's Ensemble.
