SLU PROFESSORS ATTEND FORUM IN PUEBLA, MEXICO
     HAMMOND -- Ten faculty members from Southeastern Louisiana University attended
the North American Forum at the Universidad de las Americas in Puebla, Mexico, Feb. 29-
March 3 as part of the Southeastern College of Arts and Sciences initiative to strengthen its
international studies abroad and exchange programs.
     The university, one of the most presgious in Mexico,  will host Southeastern's six week
summer Spanish language study program this summer, sponsored by the Division of Continuing
Education and the Foreign Languages and Literature Department.
     The Universidad de las Americas is located an hour and a half southeast of Mexico City
in an area rich in ancient Toltec Indian archaeological sites and Spanish colonial traditions. 
     Faculty attending the forum included Roy Blackwood, head of the Visual Arts
Department; history and government professor Charles Dranguet, coordinator of the College of
Arts and Sciences' International Studies Program; Margaret Gonzales, history and government;
Gail Hood, visual arts; Cheryll Javaherian, foreign languages; Danilo Levi, sociology; Ken
Mitchell, English; Ann Nauman, counseling, family studies and educational leadership; Ron
Nethercutt, KSLU and Music, and Mary Sue Ply, English.
     SLU professors, along with academics and representatives from the Hoover Institute of
Stanford University, the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, the Mexican and
American Chambers of Commerce and scholars from around the globe presented research papers
at the conference. They also participated in panel discussions on the North American Free Trade
Agreement, current political and economic tensions between Mexico and the United States, popular culture topics of interest to Latin America and the U.S., and a variety of international
issues.
     A keynote speech by James Jones, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, and the inauguration
of Mexico's first Greek honorary society by Universidad de las Americas President Enrique
Cardenas, highlighted the four day event.
