SLU STUDENTS SAFE IN PUEBLA, MEXICO
HAMMOND -- Eighteen Southeastern Louisiana University students who are in Puebla,
Mexico for the Summer Spanish Study Program are safe after yesterday's earthquake, according
to Al Dranguet, program director.
"I received an e-mail from my graduate student, and she said that everyone is fine,"
Dranguet said. "Classes have been canceled for today but should resume tomorrow."
The 18 students and three faculty members are at the Universadad de las Americas from
May 29 through July 12. This six week Spanish immersion program is Southeastern's oldest. The
students can receive nine hours of credit for courses such as intermediate Spanish, advanced
grammar, conversation, Latin American civilization and anthropology.
Southeastern President Sally Clausen received notification late last night about the
earthquake and contacted the Governor's Office to assist is establishing contact with the students.
"I appreciate the Office of Emergency Preparedness and other state agencies' willingness
to assist us in gaining information. Luckily, by morning we began receiving calls from our
faculty and parents notifying us that the students were all safe," Clausen said.
The Southeastern Public Information Office will update the media as more information is
made available.
