PHI KAPPA PHI SPONSORS SOUTHEASTERN HOMECOMING QUIZ BOWL
HAMMOND -- The competition during Southeastern Louisiana University’s celebration of Homecoming Week, Nov. 4-9, won’t be confined to the basketball arena.
While both the Lions and Lady Lions basketball teams will hit the court at the University Center on Homecoming Day, Nov. 9, Southeastern’s chapter of the national honor society of Phi Kappa Phi will get in the Homecoming spirit earlier in the week by sponsoring a different kind of contest.
To help give Homecoming 2002 an academic flair, the honor society is staging the Homecoming Intramural Quiz Bowl Tournament.
“If you’ve got the answers, we’ve got the questions,” said Southeastern English professor Joan Faust, president of Phi Kappa Phi.
Faust said the Quiz Bowl is recruiting seven five-member teams to compete in the Quiz Bowl, scheduled for 2-5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the Student Union Theatre.
Teams, which should include four members and one alternate, can be made up of any combination of students, faculty, staff and alumni, she said. The players will compete for cash prizes of $100, grand prize; $50, second place, and $25, third place.
To register, teams should call Faust at 985-549-5764 or e-mail her at jfaust@selu.edu by 4 p.m., Oct. 30.  Registration is $20 per team. A practice session is scheduled for 2-4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 4, also in the Student Union Theatre.
“The Quiz Bowl is a question and answer game of general knowledge and quick recall,” Faust said. “Game questions cover every conceivable topic, from history, literature, science, multiculturalism, religion and geography to current events, the arts, social sciences, sports, and popular culture.”
Faust said the tournament will follow a single-elimination format. The grand prize will go to the final winner, while second and third place winners will be determined by the overall number of games won.
