SOUTHEASTERN PHI KAPPA PHI HOSTS ANNUAL HOMECOMING QUIZ BOWL
HAMMOND -- Calling it “another
kind of athletic competition,” Southeastern Louisiana University’s chapter
of the national honor society Phi Kappa Phi is sponsoring an intramural
Quiz Bowl tournament as part of the university’s Oct. 4-9 Homecoming festivities.
The third annual tournament, which is
open to students, faculty, staff, and alumni, is scheduled for 2-6 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 5, in the Student Union Theater.
Southeastern will celebrate Homecoming
Week October 4-9 with a host of activities for both the campus and community,
including a bonfire, alumni awards evening, reunions, parade and the 6
p.m. Oct. 9 Southeastern-Northern Colorado football game in Strawberry
Stadium.
In just two years, the Phi Kappa Phi
Quiz Bowl’s friendly competition, rapid-fire questions, laughter and brain-power
have become a Southeastern Homecoming tradition. Teams sport names such
as the Dewey Decimators, the Dangling Participles and the Gramminators,
and some even get in the spirit of competition by donning playful costumes.
“The Quiz Bowl is a question and answer
game of general knowledge and quick recall,” said English professor Joan
Faust, past president of Southeastern’s Phi Kappa Phi chapter. “Game
questions cover every conceivable topic -- from history, literature, science,
multiculturalism, religion and geography to current events, the arts, social
sciences, sports, and popular culture.”
Faust said any student or faculty/staff
or alumni group is invited to put together a team of four players and one
alternate for the competition.
A $20 registration fee is required from
all teams, and the deadline for registration is Thursday, Sept. 30. The
first eight teams to submit a registration form and fee will be guaranteed
participation in the tournament.
The double-elimination tournament will
separate faculty/staff and student teams until the final playoff match,
which will pit the top faculty/staff team against the top student team,
Faust said.
Phi Kappa Phi will offer cash prizes
of $100 for the top faculty/staff and student teams and $50 for the two
second-place teams.
Registration forms and instructions
are available from Faust, room 358, D Vickers Hall, jfaust@selu.edu,
985-549-5764. The form is also available online at www.selu.edu/phikappaphi/quizbowl.html.
To familiarize teams with the Quiz Bowl equipment
and scoring, Faust said it is recommended that teams attend a practice
session from 2-4 p.m. on Oct. 4 in the Student Union Theatre.
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, founded
in 1896, is one of the oldest and most prestigious honor societies in America
and has approximately 300 chapters in the United States and the Philippines.
The Southeastern chapter was founded in 1956. Student members are invited
from the top 10 percent of the senior class and the top seven and a half
percent of the junior class. Outstanding faculty, staff, and alumni may
also be invited.
