STUDENTS TO TRAVEL TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE
HAMMOND -- Proceeds from the Southeastern Louisiana University recycling program
headed by Robert Moreau, assistant director of Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station, is
funding eight students' participation in the Tulane Environmental Law Conference 2000 in New
Orleans, March 17-18.
The funds come from the sale of aluminum and paper collected in bins in eight campus
buildings. Moreau said that to date the campaign has netted approximately $600 and plans to
continue to grow.
Recently, the recycling program received a boost when Southeastern Physical Plant
director Louie Booth assigned two student workers to assist in the recycling effort. The campus'
Roots and Shoots chapter, a student organization that focuses on environmental community
service and education, is also soliciting support for the program and Moreau is seeking additional
funds to place recycling bins in 17 more buildings.
By funding projects such as the students' conference trip, Southeastern's recycling
program is "turning waste into education," Moreau said. In addition to generating funds, the
program helps the environment by saving landfill space and natural resources. "It's also just the
right thing to do, a way in which Southeastern can provide leadership for our community,"
Moreau pointed out.
