SLU STAGES "LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD"
HAMMOND -- Kirsten Hoiseth of Wayzata, Minn., and Melissa LeBlanc of Gonzales
share the title role in Southeastern Louisiana University's Opera-Music Theatre production of a
one-act children's opera, "Little Red Riding Hood."
The Seymour Barab opera, which is based on the traditional fairy tale and presents a
valuable lessons for children, will be performed at 1 and 3 p.m., Saturday, January 22 at
Southeastern's Pottle Music Building Auditorium. Tickets, available at the door, are $1.
Keith James of Ponchatoula will play the Wolf, while Tania Krenkel of Chalmette,
Tuesday McCall of Baton Rouge and Erin Perdue of Gonzalez share the role of the mother.
Heidi Cohenour of Cedar Hill, Texas, and Amanda Tarver of Prarieville alternate as the
grandmother, and Krenkel, Perdue, Melissa LeBlanc and Nicole LeBlanc of Mandeville are the
elves.
The production is directed by visiting assistant professor of music Emily Truckenbrod
and produced by Opera-Music Theatre program director Scharmal Schrock. Music direction is by
John Bostic of Hammond.
The Southeastern students performed the children's opera along with 18 "musical
informances" last fall at Hammond Eastside and Westside Primary schools. Truckenbrod, who
was an artist and administrator for five years with the University of Iowa Arts Outreach program,
ARTS SHARE, said the performances provide both an outreach and a service outlet for the
talents and teaching skills of the Opera-Music Theatre program students.
"The students were not only able to perform, but also to share their love and knowledge
of music with area children," said Truckenbrod. Outreach experiences, she said, "create
awareness and growth for all involved. The arts cultivate a common bond between people."
