SLU STUDENTS URGED TO "REGISTER EARLY-PAY EARLY" FOR SPRING
HAMMOND -- More than a decade of rapid growth at Southeastern Louisiana
University has prompted some significant changes in the university's timetables for registration,
dropping and adding courses, fee payment, and distributing financial aid.
Southeastern's 15,000-plus students will begin encountering those changes Nov. 9-13,
when the university holds Early Registration for the spring 1999 semester.
Staff and student workers in the university's Enrollment Services, Financial Aid and
Controller's offices are sporting special green and gold t-shirts to help get the university's
"Register Early-Pay Early" message to students. Changes have been endorsed by the Student
Government Association and faculty are announcing the new dates and deadlines to all classes.
According to Southeastern Provost Randy Moffett, students' participation in Early
Registration will improve course availability throughout the registration period. "Deans and
department heads will be able to better plan the class offerings so that enough sections are
available to accommodate all students," Moffett said. The changes, he said, also will promote
accountability in the financial aid process by ensuring that students are enrolled prior to
disbursing funds.
Changes include:
Students who register early can drop and add courses Jan. 5-8 and, if they pay spring
semester fees by the new Jan. 8 deadline, they can also make schedule changes on Jan. 11-12, the
first two days of Regular Registration. No other students will be allowed to register on these
days.
Students who register early and pay fees on time will have a wider selection of classes.
They will get to pick up the canceled classes of students who did not meet the registration and

payment deadlines.
Departments will no longer hold back seats in courses for graduating seniors. Students
who plan to graduate in May 1999 must register early or run the risk of not being able to
schedule
the classes they need to complete their degrees on time.
Loan checks will no longer be distributed during Regular Registration. Students who
have accepted and returned an award letter to the university's financial aid office by Nov. 20 will
receive credits to their accounts for Pell Grants, Perkins and Stafford Loans and most
scholarships. The credits may be used to pay for tuition, room and board and bookstore
purchases.
The new deadline for paying fees by telephone with Discover, MasterCard or Visa credit
cards is Dec. 17. Later payments must be made in person or by mail.
On the last two days of Regular Registration, Jan. 13-14, new students and returning
students who did not register early will register by appointment. Students who registered early,
but did not pay fees on time and had class schedules canceled can register anytime on these two
days, but those who did register early and paid fees on time will not be allowed to make any
schedule changes. The fee payment deadline for Regular Registration is 6 p.m. Jan. 14.
Loan checks received by electronic funds transfer will be mailed to students on Jan. 15.
Loan checks not received via EFT must be picked up on Jan. 20.
Late Registration, Jan. 19-21, has been cut from four to three days and is open to anyone
needing to register for the first time or to drop and add courses. Jan. 22 is the late registration fee
payment deadline.
"While the new schedule may initially cause some inconvenience, it will increase the
efficiency of registration, fee payment, and distribution of financial aid, making the process
easier for most students," Registrar Stephen Soutullo said.
