ROCK 'N ROAR FEST V SHOWCASES SOUTHEASTERN
HAMMOND -- It's time to "Rock 'n Roar" again at Southeastern. On March 24, the
university will stage the day-long festival for area residents and visiting high school students.
Now in its fifth year, Rock 'n Roar has showcased Southeastern through educational and
entertaining displays, games, a cooking contest and health fair, food, music, tips on genealogy,
and children's camps. The event, created by the Alumni Association in 1997, entertains and
recruits teens coming to campus for the Southeast Louisiana District Literary Rally and provides
the community with a day of family fun.
Alumni Association Director Kathy Pittman said Rock 'n Roar activities will again be
headquartered around the War Memorial Student Union from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A cooking contest
will be held in the family and consumer science department's headquarters in White Hall, and an
"Introduction to Genealogy" session for adults is slated for Sims Memorial Library.
Rock 'n Roar's popular children's camps, all scheduled for 9 to 11:30 a.m., include a
dance camp conducted by the Lionettes and Lionette Alumni; an art camp under the direction of
Visual Arts Department faculty; and a baseball camp organized by Athletics. The fee is $5 for the
art and baseball camps and $15 for the dance camp. Applications are available at the Alumni
Center, 500 West University Ave., 504-549-2150 or 1-800-SLU-ALUM, and parents can also
register and pay for the camps online, Pittman said.
"While we love having people visit us at the Alumni Center, we know busy parents
appreciate not having to make an extra trip to pick up registration forms for the children's
camps," Pittman said. "With our new secure server, which makes online credit card payments
easy and safe, they can now just log on to www.selu.edu/alumni, look for the Rock 'n Roar link,
and register and pay in minutes."

ROCK 'N ROAR FEST V Add One
While their children are enjoying the camps, adults can learn the basics of who and where
to find information about family history and how to record and share the information. Beth Stahr,
a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, will present an introduction to basic
genealogical research, record-keeping, record identification, local sources of information,
genealogical etiquette and Internet sources for family history research. The session is scheduled
for 10-11:30 a.m. at the library, room 355. A $10 fee and preregistration (at the Alumni Center)
is required.
Food booths in the Student Union Park and exhibits by Southeastern departments in the
union mall will open at 8 a.m.
Also at 9 a.m., Rock 'n Roar's health fair, co-hosted by North Oaks Health System and
Southeastern's College of Nursing and Health Sciences, will begin offering a variety of health
screenings and information in the Student Union ballroom.
At 10 a.m., displays of Harley Davidson motorcycles, antique cars, a fire truck, police car
and Acadian Ambulance vehicle and Global Wildlife will get underway in the vicinity union and
the McCliman's Hall parking lot. Another popular Rock 'n Roar feature, the petting zoo, will
also open in the Student Union park. This year, Rock 'n Roar also is joining forces with the
Downtown Development District to add arts and crafts to the entertainment list.
University Police will be on hand to create free identification and fingerprinting cards for
children through the KidCare Photo I.D. program. The Student Union Park will host a plant sale,
space walk, and a variety of kiddie rides and other activities, including a petting zoo, face
painting and storytelling.
Music will be provided by the local band Bass-O-Matics. Fest-goers can also enjoy
performances by local dance studios.
Judging for the cooking contest is scheduled at 11 a.m. in White Hall. The public is
invited to taste the winning entries at noon.
