ROCK 'N ROAR IV ROLLS OUT "GREEN AND GOLD CARPET" MARCH 25
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will once again roll out a welcoming
carpet for area residents and visiting high school students at Rock 'n Roar Fest IV, scheduled for
March 25.
And, of course, the carpet is green and gold, said Kathy Pittman, director of the
Southeastern Alumni Association, the sponsor of Rock 'n Roar.
The day-long festival featuring educational and entertaining displays, games, a cooking
contest and health fair, food, music, and children's camps was created by the Alumni Association
four years ago to entertain and recruit teens coming to campus for the Southeast Louisiana
District Literary Rally and to provide the community with a day of family fun.
This year, the fest takes on even more significance as one of the university's 75th
Anniversary events. "Rock 'n Roar is a wonderful opportunity to show the visiting students and
the community what Southeastern is all about," said Alumni Association Director Kathy Pittman.
"We want everyone to join us as we celebrate 75 years of excellence at Southeastern."
Pittman said Rock 'n Roar activities will be centered around the War Memorial Student
Union, with the exception of the cooking contest, which will be held in the family and consumer
science department's headquarters in White Hall, and the children's camps, which are scheduled
for the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building (dance), the old bookstore in East Stadium (art)
and Alumni Field (baseball).
Special sessions on the Internet will be offered to adults at Sims Memorial Library.
Topics include tips on accessing online health and government information and genealogy.
Food booths in the Student Union Park and exhibits by Southeastern departments in the
union mall will open at 8 a.m. Throughout the day, Rock 'n Roar guests can enjoy tasty items
such as donuts, biscuits, hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, strawberry shortcake, chocolate
strawberries, onion mums, nachos, frito pies, muffalettas, curley cue fries, shrimp poboys, candy
and popcorn. Soft drinks, smoothies and water will also be on sale.
The children's camps will begin at 9 a.m. Camp applications are available at the Alumni
Center, 500 West University Ave., 504-549-2150 or 1-800-SLU-ALUM. Participants can also
register online at www.selu.edu/roarfest.
Also at 9 a.m., Rock 'n Roar's health fair, co-hosted by North Oaks Health System and
Southeastern's School of Nursing, will begin offering a variety of health screenings and
information in the Student Union ballroom. Adults can receive blood pressure, blood glucose and
body fat composition screening and a health risk assessment. For children, the fair will measure
height and weight and offer tips on seatbelt, skating and rollerblading safety, handwashing and
dental hygiene. Visitors will also find information on heart-healthy nutrition, cancer risks and
screening, diabetes an breast self-examination.
At 10 a.m., displays of Harley Davidson motorcycles, a fire truck, police car and Acadian
Ambulance vehicle and Global Wildlife will get underway in the vicinity union and the
McCliman's Hall parking lot.
The Student Union Park will host a plant sale, space walk, and a variety of kiddie rides
and other activities, including a petting zoo, face painting and storytelling.
Music will be provided by the local band Southern Spice. Fest-goers can also enjoy
performances by local dance studios A Touch of Class, Sheilah's Dance Academy, Lemoine
Academy of Dance and DATA.
Judging for the cooking contest is scheduled at 11 a.m. in White Hall. The public is
invited to taste the winning entries at noon.
