SLU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SPONSORS "ROCK 'N ROAR" FEST II
HAMMOND -- After the outstanding success of last year's debut, "Rock 'n Roar:
Southeastern's Mane Event," a day-long festival showcasing Southeastern Louisiana University's
fine academics and fun atmosphere, returns March 14.
Sponsored by the Southeastern Alumni Association, Rock 'n Roar is designed to entertain
and help recruit visiting high school students, who will come to campus for the District Literary
Rally. But the festival's displays, exhibits, games, food, music and family fun are also open to the
university's alumni and community friends.
Last year, some 3,000 teen guests and at least as many Southeastern faculty, staff,
students, graduates and area residents enjoyed the festival's debut, which included antique,
flower and art shows, a health fair and cooking contest, a Harley Davidson motorcycle display,
art, baseball and dance camps, storytelling, and educational displays of all kinds by Southeastern
departments.
Rock n' Roar II, said Alumni Association Director Kathy Pittman, will keep and build on
many of last years events, adding a petting zoo and an antique/classics car show to the schedule.
Southeastern's new Parent Organization also plans to man an informational and recruiting booth,
Pittman said.
Pittman also said that Southeastern's Job Location and Career Development Office,
headed by Charlotte Swinney, will coordinate a job fair where local businesses can talk to high
school and college students about potential part-time jobs.
"The idea is to have a well-rounded program where the visiting students, if they wish, can

apply for admission; get information about scholarships, financial aid and academics and even
line up a possible job," said Pittman.
"We're also exploring the possibility of offering a computer camp," she said, "and we
plan to increase participation even more in both the health fair and the cooking contest." Pittman
said North Oaks Health System and Southeastern's School of Nursing will again sponsor the
health fair and the Hammond Daily Star and Southeastern's Department of Family and Consumer
Sciences will host the cooking contest.
Guy Recotta, chairman of the 1997 fest, will be joined at the helm of festival planning
this year by Hammond business person Judy Althouse.
Pittman said North Oaks Health System will again sponsor a health fair and the Daily
Star and Southeastern's Department of Family and Consumer Sciences will host the cooking
contest.
Southeastern Enrollment Counselor April Foster, who coordinates the Literary Rally, said
feedback from high school counselors and students about last year's Rock 'n Roar was
overwhelmingly positive. "They said it was entertaining and exciting," she said, "and a big
improvement over the days when students had nothing to do while waiting for test scores to be
posted.en their tests were over, but they were waiting for their scores."
Foster said students from 64 schools in Tangipahoa, Livingston, St. Tammany,
Washington, East Baton Rouge and St. Charles Parishes will participate in this year's rally,
taking tests in 42 subjects. First place finishers will be offered $100 Southeastern scholarships
and will advance to the state rally at Louisiana State University in April.
