SLU'S ROCK 'N ROAR FEST OFFERS KIDS CAMPS, FUN FOR ALL
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's second annual campus-community
festival, "Rock 'n Roar: Southeastern's 'Mane' Event," will be full of family fun, especially for
children who can have a good time while brushing up their skills in baseball, art, computers and
dance.
The March 14 festival, designed to designed to showcase Southeastern's fine academics
and fun atmosphere for visiting District Literary Rally high school students, alumni and
community friends, will also offer a series of children's camps, according to Alumni Association
Director Kathy Pittman and Rock 'n Roar Chairman Judy Althouse of Hammond.
Pittman said 21st Judicial District Attorney Scott Perrilloux and fellow Lions Baseball
alumni Jeff Motes, Tommy Ferran and Chris Laiche will host a camp for young baseball
enthusiasts from 9 a.m. to noon at Alumni Field, the SLU Lion's baseball diamond. The camp is
open to children ages 6-13 for a $5 fee.
Members of the Sims Memorial Library staff will conduct sessions for Rock 'n Roar
visitors age six and up on how to search for information on the Internet in Room 355 on the
library's third floor. Computer camps sessions are scheduled for 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The
computer camp also has a $5 fee. Parents are welcome to accompany their children.

ROCK 'N ROAR OFFERS CAMPS, FUN FOR ALL -- Add One
art camp for children of all ages from 9-11 a.m. at the library. Don Marshall, director of the CRS
Program and Southeastern's Clark Hall Gallery, said the camp, which is free, will take place
under the library's breezeway. Participants, who must be accompanied by parents or an adult,
will be shown how to use their creativity to make items such as masks and bookmarks.
Lionette Alumni will offer a mini-version of their popular summer dance camp for
children ages 3-12 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building. The
camp's $15 fee includes lunch, a t-shirt and awards. The camp will end with a performance by
the young participants for parents and other guests.
Camp applications are available at the Alumni Center, 500 W. University Ave., 504-
549-2150.
Also for children, the library will sponsor professional storytellers Bonnie Bess Wood
and Frank Levy in "Stories in Motion" at 1 p.m. in the library lobby. Rock 'n Roar, which is
scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., also plans a petting zoo with goats, rabbits and other animals;
a basketball free throw; a space walk and other children's games, and free balloons given away
by Southeastern's Student Government Association.
Kids -- and Rock 'n Roar patrons of all ages -- can enjoy a wide range of food booths, an
antique car show, displays of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, police, fire and ambulance vehicles;
a plant show; a variety of educational displays by Southeastern departments; and games such as
"the Human Bowling Ball" and jousting.
Guests will also be able to obtain application, financial aid and campus job information.
North Oaks Health System and Southeastern's School of Nursing will sponsor a health
fair and the Daily Star and Southeastern's Family and Consumer Sciences Department are
sponsoring a cooking contest. Prizes for the contest are $100, first place; $50, second, and $25,
third. The contest boasts State Representatives Diane Winston and Tank Powell as celebrity
judges. Finalists also will receive hand-painted aprons, compliments of the Family and
Consumer Sciences Department.
