ROCK 'N ROAR III ROLLS OUT "GREEN AND GOLD CARPET" MARCH 13
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will once again roll out a welcoming
carpet for area residents and visiting high school students at Rock 'n Roar Fest III, scheduled for
March 13.
And, of course, the carpet is green and gold, said Kathy Pittman, director of the
Southeastern Alumni Association, the sponsor of Rock 'n Roar.
The day-long festival featuring educational and entertaining displays, games, a cooking
contest and health fair, food, music, and children's camps was created by the Alumni Association
two years ago to entertain and recruit teens coming to campus for the Southeast Louisiana
District Literary Rally and to provide the community with a day of family fun.
"For the past two years, Rock 'n Roar been a successful way to showcase our university
for our regional high school students and to unite the campus and community," Pittman said.
"It's just a wonderful opportunity to show what Southeastern is all about."
Southeastern Enrollment Counselor Erica Betts, who is coordinating the Literary Rally,
said 2,949 students from 63 schools in Tangipahoa, Livingston, St. Tammany, Washington, East
Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Iberville, St. Helena, West Feliciana and St. Charles Parishes
will participate in this year's rally.
Pittman said Rock 'n Roar III will build on its successful formula and will join forces
with the Ikon Oaks Classic for Special Olympics, a 5K and 1-mile fun run/walk headquartered at
Strawberry Stadium.
"We're looking forward to another great day," she said. "The Ikon Oaks Classic should
really get Rock 'n Roar off to a running start."
Pittman said Rock 'n Roar activities will be centered around the War Memorial Student

North Campus Gym also will host an all-day Louisiana Volleyball Tournament.
Registration for the Ikon Oaks Classic, scheduled for 7 a.m. at the stadium, is Rock 'n
Roar's first event. Runners will take off from the stadium at 9 a.m. and can have fun at a post-
race award celebration featuring a raffle, Cajun music and refreshments.
Food booths in the Student Union Park and exhibits by Southeastern departments in the
union mall will open at 8 a.m. Throughout the day, Rock 'n Roar guests can enjoy fried chicken
fingers, hamburgers, shrimp po-boys, onion mums, hot dogs, chilli buns, jambalaya, curly fries,
assorted sweets and baked goods, cotton candy, popcorn, candied apples, donuts and beignets.
Soft drinks and water will also be on sale.
Academic displays will include the chemistry and physics department's "Educational
Adventures in Science," featuring kite-making; story boards on the history of western
civilization, American and African American history by the history and political science
department, and a hands-on robotics display by the industrial technology department.
The children's camps will begin at 9 a.m. Camp applications are available at the Alumni
Center, 500 West University Ave., 504-549-2150 or 1-800-SLU-ALUM.
Also at 9 a.m., Rock 'n Roar's health fair, co-hosted by North Oaks Health System and
Southeastern's School of Nursing, will begin offering a variety of health screening and
information in the Student Union ballroom. Adults can receive blood pressure, blood glucose and
body fat composition screening and a health risk assessment. For children, the fair will measure
height and weight and offer tips on seatbelt, skating and rollerblading safety, handwashing and
dental hygiene. Visitors will also find information on heart-healthy nutrition, cancer risks and
screening, diabetes an breast self-examination.
At 10 a.m., displays of Harley Davidson motorcycles, a fire truck, police car and Acadian
