FAMILY'S GENEROSITY AIDS SLU MUSIC DEPARTMENT
HAMMOND -- The generosity of Hammond's Schneider family will once again benefit
the Southeastern Music Department.
Mrs. Marietta Reimers Schneider and her children, Fay Schneider Bright and Jeff and
Carl Schneider, have made a substantial donation to Southeastern to endow the Hans Schneider
Excellence in Music Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship memorializes the late Hans
Schneider, a longtime patron of the arts who was himself an accomplished musician.
The scholarship will go to talented undergraduate or graduate students "who have a
passion for instrumental, piano, or vocal music with potential for a distinguished career in the
field of music."
Mrs. Schneider said that her husband, a native of Germany, "was always interested in
furthering music. He played the piano himself and studied to be a concert pianist, although his
studies were curtailed by World War II," she said.
Mrs. Schneider said her family, the Reimers, were also strong advocates of music and the
arts. "My mother (Fay Warren Reimers) thought that everyone should be exposed to music," she
said. Mrs. Schneider said that her mother raised the money to pay for music teachers in
Hammond schools by staging community musicals. "That was a first for Hammond," she said.
