HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s Center for Contemporary Art will host the Southern States Sculpture Exhibition Oct. 7-Nov. 6 at the gallery, located in the university’s East Stadium.
The exhibit, which is part of the university’s annual fall arts festival, Fanfare, will feature artists from six southern states and will open with a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 7, said gallery director Dale Newkirk.
Ken Little, a nationally known sculptor who teaches at the University of Texas, San Antonio, juried the exhibition. His work will be exhibited along with artists Cliff Tresner, Louisiana; Niles Wallace, Greely Myatt, and Dan Bethune, Tennessee; Robbie Barber, Texas; Billie Grace Lynn and R.F. Buckley, Florida; Tad Gloeckler, Georgia; and Richard Saxton, Alabama.
The Southern States Sculpture Exhibition is scheduled in conjunction with the International Sculpture Center conference in New Orleans Oct. 28-31, Newkirk said. He said Southeastern’s visual arts department and the Center for Contemporary Art has organized a series of free lectures and workshops to coincide with the exhibition. The lectures and workshops are open to students and the general public.
“The department of visual arts is hoping to attract members of the International Sculpture Center attending the conference in New Orleans and students from nearby universities to campus for the exhibition and lectures,” Newkirk said.
On Oct. 26, ceramics lectures and workshops will be presented by Steve Rucker from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Barnard Mattox from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the ceramics studio, East Stadium room 149.
Sculpture lecturers scheduled for Oct. 27 include Greely Myatt at 9 a.m. and Niles Wallace at 1 p.m. Sculpture lectures on Oct. 28 will be presented by Dan Bethune at 10 a.m.; Austin Collins, head of the University of Notre Dame sculpture department, at 1 p.m., and Little at 4 p.m. The lectures will all take place in the CCA Gallery.
