IGrowing up with a father, six uncles and an aunt
who were physicians, it came as no surprise when College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Award
recipient Rebecca Sherman of Amite decided at a young age that she, too, would be a
doctor.
After graduating from Amite High School as valedictorian, Sherman followed her family's
legacy and enrolled at Southeastern. "All of my family went here," she explained. Next stop is
medical school at either Louisiana State University or Tulane University. While so many
students
covet straight A's, Sherman has the system of making the grades all figured out. "I like to study, I
mean, I guess I really like to study. Especially when it's something I'm interested in, like biology,
and it's challenging," Sherman said.
While reflecting on her days at Southeastern, Sherman said she recalls a lot of late night
study sessions with classmates who, somewhere in between note-taking and examinations,
became
close friends. "In every class it seems like there were always people I'd get together and study
with. They really became friends and I will miss them a lot, because many of them are going to
dental school and other places," Sherman said.
Southeastern has equipped Sherman well to tackle challenges that lie ahead in medical school,
she
said. "We have great teachers. I can't really name just one, although Dr. (Nick) Norton really
stands out. But I guess the main thing that's so great about Southeastern is the one-on-one you
get here. The faculty is really great."
