SLU WINS TWO AWARDS IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIOSN
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University won Second Place in the International
Rubbermaid Foundation "Good Business Is Good Business" Competition on business ethics.
The winners were announced in conjunction with the International Competition of the Students
in Free Enterprise, Inc in Kansas City.
Southeastern's winning entry was based on the James Livingston Memorial Lecture held
March 4 in Hammond, where Dr. David Lowry of Freeport-McMoRan served as guest speaker.
The Lecture was underwritten by John Batson, longtime friend and business associate of the late
James Livingston, relative of a prominent Hammond family. With the College of Business,
Southeastern's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) submitted to the competition a picture
chronicle of the Lecture and the work which went into it.
Southeastern's Second Place finish in this international competition brings the University
a trophy and $2000 for the SIFE Program in the University's growing Development Foundation.
The Southeastern SIFE chapter is underwritten by Walmart Stores, Inc.
Additionally, at the International Exposition, Southeastern's SIFE team won the Second
Runner-Up trophy in the Western Auto League and $750 in that semi-finals competition at the
Bartle Convention Center in Kansas City.
For this part of the international competition, Southeastern's students gave a 24-minute
oral presentation using the state-of-the-art computerized audiovisual technology from the College
of Business, followed by a question and answer session, before judges drawn from the executive
ranks of major corporations.

Southeastern's audiovisual presentation concerned the Business Ethics Lecture and over
40 other projects carried out during the year by the Students in Free Enterprise at the Hammond
university. Most of these projects involved illiteracy and its economic effects--or the benefits of
education in the workforce.
In April Southeastern's SIFE Team won the Memphis Regional Competition. In addition
to receiving $1900, that win qualified Southeastern's Team to represent the region in Kansas City
for the International Competition. The regional competition was underwritten by Alpha One
Merchandising and Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals.
Over 400 universities and colleges compete in this annual free enterprise competition,
including 40 teams from former Communist Countries.
Member's of this year's Southeastern SIFE team are President Chris Petersen, a
management and marketing major and Jimmarie Shiyou, marketing, both of Mandeville; Todd
Dean, communication, and Jerry Hill, business education, both of Bogalusa; Kristin Hunter,
accounting, Bush; Nancy Kinsley, communication, Covington; and Thomas Woods, finance,
Hammond. Dr. Josie Walker, assistant professor of office administration and business education,
accompanied the team to Kansas City. Dr. David Ramsey is advisor to the team.
In the 10 years since its inception under former business dean and now Vice President for
University Advancement Joe Miller, Southeastern's SIFE Program has now won 19 trophies,
including two national awards, and over $25,000 for the University's Development Foundation.
Membership is open to all majors, with most of the participants over the years coming from
Southeastern's strong College of Business, accredited at all levels by the American Assembly of
Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
Southeastern has won more awards in the annual Students in Free Enterprise
competitions than have all other universities in Louisiana.
