SLU HOSTS NATIONAL MUSIC TEACHERS CONVENTION NOV 6-8
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will host the National Association of
Teachers of Singing Southern Regional Convention November 6, 7 and 8 at the Pottle Music
Building. The Convention will offer a lecture on Paul Robeson Thursday November 6 which will
be open to the public.
"The Vocal Legacy of Paul Robeson" is the topic of the free lecture that will be offered at
11am and again at 2pm in the recital hall. Laura Dankner of Loyola University in New Orleans is
the guest lecturer. Dankner has done research on the singing career of Robeson who is probably
best known for his appearance in the musical Showboat and in the movie The Emperor Jones.
Robeson first achieved fame in the 1920's as a concert singer and stage actor, and was also a civil
rights activist. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Six hundred students and one hundred teachers from Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi
will participate in the convention. Students will audition for monetary awards in 20 different
classical and musical theater classifications. The auditions serve to encourage more diligent
study in the preparation of distinguished repertoire, stimulate the desire and incentive for vocal
and musical improvement, provide public appearances for outstanding students and recognize
unusual achievement and talent.
In addition to the auditions, the participants will be treated to a master class and
performance by the nationally acclaimed operatic baritone, Robert Honeysucker. Honeysucker
has performed with opera companies such as Tulsa, Boston Lyric, Kansas City Lyric and Lake
George as well as in New Zealand and Germany. He was the recipient of the National Opera
Association Artist's Award and teaches on the faculties of the Boston Conservatory and the
Longy School of Music.
For more information on the conference and lecture, call the music department at 549-
