SLU SLWP SOLICITING STUDENT, TEACHER WRITING FOR ANTHOLOGY
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project (SLWP) at Southeastern
Louisiana University is soliciting manuscripts by students and teachers for an anthology
showcasing excellent writing about life in Louisiana.
SLWP Director Richard Louth said teachers may submit up to five pieces, which can take
any form -- essay, letter, poem, or story. Manuscripts should be submitted by April 14, preferably
by email to rlouth@selu.edu. Teachers are encouraged to send their own as well as their students'
writing.
"The purpose of the anthology will be to capture southeastern Louisiana and its people
through writing," Louth said. "Each accepted writer will receive a free copy of the book."
Published last year, SLWP's first anthology, "A Sense of Place," included approximately
70 selections of all types of writing from teachers and students at schools in Tangipahoa, St.
Tammany, Washington, Livingston and St. Helena Parishes.
Submissions for "A Sense of Place" were solicited from SLWP teachers and their
students, from schools receiving SLWP in service workshops and from schools participating in
SLWP's free Rural In service Grant Program. "We looked for good writing, striking stories,
memorable details and diverse voices," Louth said.
"A Sense of Place" debuted with public readings, generated two Public Broadcasting
System radio shows and was catalogued at the Louisiana State Library.
Louth said those who cannot send entries electronically, should instead send typed copies,
accompanied by ASCII-formatted files on a disk, to Richard Louth, Director, SLWP, SLU
10327, Hammond, LA 70402.
