SLU SLWP OFFERING SCHOOLS $1,500 GRANTS FOR WRITING WORKSHOPS
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project (SLWP) at Southeastern
Louisiana University is offering free professional development workshops on teaching writing to
qualifying area schools this spring.
SLWP Director Richard Louth said the grants, offered in conjunction with the National
Writing Project, are designed to improve the quantity and quality of writing in local K-12
classrooms.
Any Florida Parishes school system or school can apply for the workshop, which will
consist of a coordinated series of five 90-minute workshops on the teaching of writing. To
compete for free workshops, a school must submit a proposal outlining student need, faculty
interest and administrative support. Preference will be given to school that have not yet received
an SLWP workshop.
March 24 is the application deadline.
"These interactive, practical workshops will be specially designed for each selected site
and will be conducted by experienced classroom teachers trained by the National Writing
Project," Louth said. A SLWP teacher consultant will coordinate the workshops and provide
continuity between sessions, he said.
SLWP is one of six National Writing Project sites in Louisiana and has conducted more
than 120 writing workshops in the Florida Parishes. Last year, four schools in Livingston and St.
Tammany Parish were chosen for the free in service workshops, which are valued at $1,500.
Schools or school systems interested in applying for writing workshops should contact
Louth at 549-2102/2100, or rlouth@selu.edu.
