SLU WRITING PROJECT SHOWCASES "BEST TEACHING PRACTICES"
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project at Southeastern Louisiana
University demonstrated its best teaching practices and showcased workshops available to area
schools for more than 50 teachers on October 21 at the SLU University Center.
Led by SLWP co-directors Richard Louth of the Southeastern English faculty and
Melanie Plesh of Mandeville High School, "Showcase of Best Teaching Practices" addressed
area needs in improving the teaching of writing through a series of demonstrations and sessions.
More than 50 teachers from Tangipahoa, St. Tammany, Livingston, Washington, St. Helena,
and St. John the Baptist parishes attended the special writing showcase.
Schools represented as presenters and participants at the October 21 showcase include:
Tangipahoa Parish: Ponchatoula High School, Ponchatoula Jr. High School, the
Southeastern Lab School;
Washington Parish: Franklinton Jr. High School;
St. Tammany Parish: Mandeville Jr. High School, Fontainebleau High School, Abita
Springs Middle School, Boyet Jr. High School;
St. John the Baptist Parish: Glade School, Ascension of Our Lord School.
A total of 13 SLWP "Teacher Consultants" led poster presentations on subjects ranging
from "Writing about a Sense of Place" to "Involving Parents in their Children's Writing." Poster
presenters displayed their work and their students' work, gave handouts, answered questions and
talked one-on-one with participants about their classroom strategies.
Presenters were Louth, Joan Anderson, Sarah Ross, Beth Calloway, and Dan Butcher, all
from Southeastern; Melanie Plesh, Mandeville High School; Lynne Vance, Sumner High

School; Mary Beth Crovetto, Ponchatoula High School; Gary Porter, St. Helena Central High
School; Wilda Brister, Springfield High School; Leslie Pelezo, John L. Ory Magnet School;
Olga Jackson, Franklinton Elementary School, and Esther Jordan, Florida Avenue
Elementary.
Six teachers who recently served as Summer Fellows in the SLWP 2000 Summer
Institute also led hour-long workshops on teaching writing. They were Tricia Wagner,
Freshwater Elementary; Pam Rawls and Cheryl Lass, Seventh Ward Elementary; Nancy
Stokes and Jane Blades, Sumner Junior High School; Tracy Amond, Walker High School, and
Holly James, Bogalusa High School.
Louth invited schools or school districts to register their faculty for a series of three
inservice days on teaching writing for K-12 teachers, which SLWP will present at Southeastern
during the spring 2001 semester. To register, schools should contact Louth at SLU 10327,
Hammond, LA 70402, or rlouth@selu.edu. Schools may also call 549-2102/2100 to arrange
customized workshops on their own campuses, Louth said.
