SOUTHEASTERN SOCIAL STUDIES FAIR WINNERS ANNOUNCED
HAMMOND -- Approximately fifty schools participated in the 1999 social studies fair
at Southeastern Louisiana University March 17. Grand prize winners for individual and group
projects were chosen in three divisions Division I (grades 4-6) Division II (grades 7-8) and
Division III (grades 9-12). The winners will advance to the state social studies fair. The winners
were:
DIVISION I- INDIVIDUAL: Grand Prize-Allison Wilder, Tchefuncte Middle School
"Stonehenge"; Runner-Up- Brittany Dehart, Mandeville Middle, "What is an Impeachable
Offense."
DIVISION I - GROUP: Grand Prize - Bailey Williams and Emily Perrino, Cedarwood
School, "Disease Never Sleeps"; Runner Up- Carrie Cushman and Elizabeth Braud,
Cedarwood School, "Vietnam: Eighteen Years of Horror."
DIVISION II- INDIVIDUAL: Grand Prize- Charlie Barattini, St. Peter's School, "Mountain
Lying Down"; Runner up - Gretchen Gottfried, Cedarwood School, 'Pompeii: Buried Alive."
DIVISION II- GROUP: Grand Prize- Blake McKee and Bryce Feragino, Holy Ghost, "Putting
the Brakes on Road Rage"; Runner up- Betsy Champagne and Meric Meissner, Cedarwood
School, "The Times They Were a Changin."
DIVISION III- INDIVIDUAL: Grand Prize- Derek Lemoine, St. Paul's, "The Paradoxes of
Zeno"; Runner up- Antimony L. Gerhardt, Hammond High, "Who'll elect our President in
2000?"
DIVISION III- GROUP: Grand Prize-Holli Howard and Ishalyn Ballard, Sumner High, "Are
you a smart consumer?"; Runner-Up- Bret Barattini and Josh Mancusco, St. Paul's
"Controlling the Mississippi."
