SLU SPRING ENROLLMENT UP AGAIN
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Spring 1998 enrollment totals
14,433, an almost 1.3 percent increase from 14,252 students last spring.
According to official enrollment figures, compiled after the 14th class day, Tangipahoa
Parish heads the list of "top six" parishes, swapping places with St. Tammany, which had the
largest parish enrollment a year ago.
The spring 1998 official enrollment profile shows that 2,864 students from Tangipahoa
Parish are enrolled this semester, while 2,848 are from St. Tammany Parish, 2,696 from East
Baton Rouge Parish, 1,584 from Livingston Parish, 1,044 from Jefferson Parish and 594 from
Ascension Parish.
Spring 1998 enrollment includes 1,056 new students, 526 of them beginning freshmen
and 218 of them new graduate students. Graduate enrollment, which totals 1,794, is up an
estimated 7 percent from spring 1997's 1,683.
Southeastern Registrar Steve Soutullo and Dean of Continuing Education Gerald Guidroz
agree that the jump in graduate enrollment likely can be attributed to teachers, who are enrolling
in Southeastern technology-related courses.
Teachers, Guidroz said, are signing up for off-campus technology courses to "upgrade
their technology skills and learn about integrating computers into their classrooms."
Multicultural student enrollment also is up over spring 1997 by more than 300 students,
totalling 2,102.
Southeastern has 3,356 seniors this semester, 2,455 juniors, 2,846 sophomores, 4,282
freshmen and 1,794 graduate students. Female students out-number men, 9,021 to 5,412, and the
average student's age is 24.3.
