SLU'S CLARK HALL GALLERY FEATURES SCOTTISH ARTISTS
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Clark Hall Gallery will host
"Scottish Spirit," an exhibit of 21 artists representing the 500 members of the Society of Scottish
Artists, Nov. 23-Dec. 18 at Clark Hall Gallery.
The exhibit includes painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, video installation, site
specific installation, web art and a wide variety of mixed media. Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m.,
weekdays.
An opening reception for "Scottish Spirit" is scheduled for 3-5 p.m., Nov. 23 in the
gallery.
"Southeastern is honored to host such a prestigious exhibit," said Roy Blackwood, head
of Southeastern's visual arts department. Blackwood said the exhibit is part of the United
States/Scotland Educational Consortium's efforts to promote scholarly and creative exchanges
between American and Scottish faculty and students. As past president and a member of the
board of the National Council of Art Administrators, Blackwood has been working closely with
colleagues in Scotland for the past three years to arrange such exchanges.
Society of Scottish Artists President Gwyneth Leech, who will represent the society at the
exhibition's opening reception, said "Scottish Spirit" "epitomizes the current renaissance of
Scotland's identity and culture, expressed by the 1997 referendum in favor of a devolved Scottish
Parliament." Leech said the artists "are ambassadors for a new Scotland: imaginative, witty,
vigorous and international. Far from the 'tartan and heather' image that some might expect, these
artists celebrate a diversity of cultural backgrounds, exploring concerns both local and global."
The exhibit features the works of Leech, Reinhard Behrens, Maureen Bell, Mary Bourne,
