SLU TELECOURSES OFFERED THROUGH ST. TAMMANY GOVERNMENT
ACCESS CHANNEL
HAMMOND Five college-credit telecourses will be offered this fall through the St.
Tammany Parish government access channels under an agreement between the parish and
Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.
The courses will be carried on Charter Communications' Channel 10 (Slidell to Covington)
and Channel 17 (Folsom to Bush) and will be broadcast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday through
Friday. Courses being offered are Special Studies in English, Western Civilization to 1500,
American History to 1877, Personal Health, and Introductory Sociology. Each course offers three
hours credit.
St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis said the parish is pleased to be able to offer the
courses to its residents. "Through the government access channel, the citizens of St. Tammany
will be able to continue their education in their own homes and at their own schedule," he said.
"This will be a boon to parents who are home with children, shift workers, and other citizens who
cannot make regular trips to Southeastern's campus."
Southeastern Director of Continuing Education Gerald Guidroz said that individuals seeking
to obtain college credit for the courses must apply and register with Southeastern. Applications
must be filed by Aug. 11 for consideration for the fall semester enrollment. Applications can be
obtained from Southeastern Financial Aid and Admissions Office, North Campus, Building B in
Hammond, or at the university's St. Tammany Center located on the third floor of the parish's
administrative complex. The courses are also open to current Southeastern students. Students can
also apply for admission online at www.selu.edu.
"Because Southeastern is moving to a selective admissions procedure in the fall semester, it's
important that applications be filed early enough to allow time to collect high school transcripts,
ACT scores and other information," Guidroz said. Under Southeastern's new admissions
standards, entering freshmen must have either a minimum 20 composite on the ACT exam, a 2.0
or higher grade point average in certain high school courses, or be ranked in the upper 50
percentile of their high school graduating class.
"The telecourses are an example of Southeastern's goal of being accessible to the residents of
the area," Guidroz added. "Many of our students work, have family responsibilities, or maintain
various schedules. With videotaping ability they can now take courses to fit their own
schedules."
He said that Southeastern is now offering courses in 15 different locations in Southeast
Louisiana. Additional information on the telecourses can be obtained by calling Southeastern's
St. Tammany Center at 504-893-6251, the Hammond campus at 1-800-222-7358 or by visiting
the university's website at www.selu.edu.
