SOUTHEASTERN PILOTS ‘BRIDGE’ PROGRAM FOR ENTERING FRESHMEN HAMMOND -- Fifteen new Southeastern Louisiana University students participated this summer in a pilot program designed to help new freshmen successfully make the jump from high school to college. Through “Summer Bridge,” implemented by Transitional Studies Department in the College of Basic Studies, students earned as much as eight hours credit, taking freshmen or transitional (developmental) courses in subjects such as mathematics, English, and library science and receiving extra support through tutoring and workshops. They also took the University 101 course online and had the opportunity to visit and learn about campus facilities, said Transitional Studies Director Sarah Spence. University 101 provides students with information on various university requirements, resources, technology advising, and distance education opportunities. “It was very successful,” Spence said. “Several of the students said it made the difference in their success and others remarked that it helped them get over anxiety about mathematics courses.” Spence said the new program was two years in the planning. “Our goal was to introduce students to college life and services, and help them learn crucial study skills, all in a learning community setting,” Spence said. The program was coordinated by transitional studies faculty member John Hoover. Also participating in Summer Bridge were Dave Busekist and Mary Mocsary, transitional studies; Brian O’Callaghan, mathematics; and Angela Dunnington, Library.
