DEADLINES APPROACHING FOR SOUTHEASTERN “ACADEMIC ADVENTURE” SUMMER CAMPS IN ST. TAMMANY, HAMMOND
       HAMMOND – Children can launch rockets, learn a language, explore the wetlands, search for pirate treasure, and create masterpieces with paint and clay at Southeastern Louisiana University summer camps – and that’s just in June.
       Deadlines are fast approaching to sign up for June sessions of “Academic Adventures,” more than a dozen camps offered this summer in St. Tammany Parish and in Hammond by Southeastern’s colleges of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and Science and Technology. 
       Camp registration forms are available at www.selu.edu/summercamps or through the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Fayard Hall, room 302, 985-549-2101.
       May 31 is the deadline to sign up for the first camp, “Space and Rocketry ’05,” which will be held June 6-10 at the Southeastern St. Tammany Center in Mandeville. The center is located on the third floor of the St. Tammany Administrative Complex on Koop Drive off the intersection of I-12 and Louisiana 59. 
       The camp is open to children in grades 1-7 at a cost of $185. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Daily extended care, which is provided from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., is available for an extra $15.
        “The countdown has begun, but we still have openings,” said camps coordinator Linda Munchausen. She said Space and Rocketry ’05 is one of four Southeastern summer camps that follow the nationally recognized format of “Science Adventures,” a 25-year-old series of hands-on science education programs that introduce children to thematic science concepts. 
       At the Space and Rocketry ’05 camp, “We’re going to leap into a voyage of discovery as we build and launch the Newton III rocket, a Science Adventures original with a payload compartment and parachute recovery,” Munchausen said. “We will also make a Mars rover, master the telescope, chart the constellations, and look for sunspots, meteorites and galaxies.”
       Sign-up deadlines for other camps are two weeks prior to the opening date. After deadlines, camps may not be able to add additional campers; however, inquiries about space availability are welcome.
       In addition to “Space and Rocketry ’05,” the June camp schedule includes 
       -- Wacky Wetlands Weekend at Southeastern’s Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station on Pass Manchac. The residential camp is open to students in grades 6-8 with separate sessions for girls, June 15-17, and boys, June 22-24.  
       The three-day, two-night residential camp, directed by Deborah Dardis, assistant professor of biological sciences at Southeastern, will introduce students to the Lake Pontchartrain Basin wetlands. The camp will include hands-on, high tech scientific investigations and will also feature activities such as canoeing, a scavenger hunt, hiking, aquatic and plant collection, water and soil sampling, viewing of microscopic organisms, and computer technology.
       The $185 camp fee includes food, lodging, and transportation. Each session has a 20-student limit.
       -- Spanish, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., June 13-17, Southeastern Laboratory School, and French, June 20-24, St. Tammany Center.  The camps are open to grades 1-7 and cost $125.  Before and after care is available. A second Spanish session at the St. Tammany Center is scheduled for July 18-22, while an Italian camp is scheduled July 11-15 at the Lab School.
       Conducted by Southeastern foreign language faculty, the unique programs will combine learning Spanish and French with the fun of dancing, singing and painting. Songs, sports, food, creative dramatics, puppet shows, art, ballet and fairy tales will be used to stimulate interest in a foreign language. 
       “Our instructors are fluent in their native tongues and are excited about sharing their cultural knowledge and love for language,” Munchausen said.
       -- Clay Expressions Camp, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., June 13-24, Southeastern Laboratory School. “Come get your hands dirty and have fun,” said local artist and arts educator Denise Tullier-Holly, who will guide students in grades 4-8 in creating with clay. “From basic pinch pots to the potter’s wheel to glazing finished work, we will try it all,” Tullier-Holly said. Campers also will work with other 3-D building materials to create projects such as winged creatures and giant origami. The cost is $250 and extended care is available.
       -- Mystery of the Lost Pirate Treasure, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., June 20-24, Southeastern Laboratory School. Another “Science Adventure” camp, the session is open to grades 1-7. The fee is $185 and before/after care is available. Students will learn about natural sciences such as biology, geology and oceans in the guise of looking for the lost treasure of “the Dread Pirate Pyrite, a notorious rock hound.”  
       -- Painting Workshop, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., July 27-July 1, Clark Hall, Southeastern campus. Covington artist Gail Hood, a veteran Southeastern visual arts faculty member, will conduct this intense workshop for high school students. 
       “Participants will complete up to 15 paintings as they learn the craft and tap their creativity,” Hood said. 
       She said the workshop will cover drawing and color theory as well as a wide variety of approaches to painting, both traditional and more contemporary. The camp fee is $160.

       July and August camps at the St. Tammany Center are “Kids Just Like You Became Famous Explorers,” July 11-15; “Digital Arts Camp,” July 18-22; and “Spanish,” July 18-22. 
       On Southeastern’s main campus in Hammond, students can enroll in “Italian,” July 11-15; “Children’s Art Education Workshop,” July 11-21 (weekdays); “Fantastic Physics Fun,” July 18-22; “Gizmo’s Robot Factory,” July 25-29, and the “Southeastern Music Festival” (formerly the Young Musicians Camp), July 5-15 (weekdays).
       The Young Writer’s Camp will be held at the Hammond Regional Arts Center in downtown Hammond, Aug. 1-5.
