SOUTHEASTERN TO OFFER SUMMER STUDIES ABROAD
     HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University in consortium with ten regional
universities is offering students the opportunity to summer study abroad.
     International Studies and Programs Director Al Dranguet said that with ten programs
being offered during the summer 2001, students will have the opportunity to travel to Paris,
France; San Jose, Costa Rica; Verona Italy; London, England; Edinburgh, Scotland;  Ocho Rios,
Jamaica and Innsbruck, Austria. Each program will offer a variety  courses, including foreign
languages, relating to the students' interest of study. 
     Dranguet emphasizes the importance of  students taking advantage of this opportunity. "If
a student does not take advantage of foreign studies or travel while they are in the university
setting, it is more than likely they will never have the chance to experience travel abroad this
reasonably priced," he said.
     The tentative schedule of the study abroad sites and course offerings, dates, credit hours,
and approximate costs (without meals and personal expenses), includes:
      France: This year the students can travel to Paris and Provence to study for five weeks,
from July 9-August 13. Courses include French, French grammar, literature, conversation, and
civilization, English literature and marketing. Margaret Marshall, head of Southeastern's
Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, will be one of the instructors. Students will
earn six credit hours for their study. Prerequisites for the program are French 101, 102, and 201.
All courses will be taught in English. The cost of the program is $3,999.
      Spanish: The five-week Spanish study program is being offered from May 21-June 25
in San Jose, Costa Rica.  Courses include Spanish, Spanish grammar, conversation, civilization,
and an independent study course. The students will be accompanied by Stuart Stewart of

SUMMER STUDY   Add One 
Southeastern's foreign languages department will be taking part in the program. Prerequisite for
the program is a "B" or better in Spanish 101. The student will earn six hours of credit and the
cost is $3,199.
      Italy: Students interested Italy and the Italian language can attend the five-week
program in Verona, Italy, which runs from May 30-July 4. The program offers elementary Latin
and Italian, intermediate Latin and Italian, Italian culture and civilization, readings in Italian,
Shakespeare, and Renaissance studies. The instructor will be Southeastern foreign languages
professor Lucia Harrison. Students will receive six ours of credit. There are no foreign language
requirements for students. Cost is $4,299.
      England: Along with other universities, Southeastern will offer 26 courses in London,
England, through the British studies program, one of the oldest international study programs. in
the United States. The students will be housed in new dormitories at the University of London in
Downtown London, overlooking the Thames River. Courses include theatre and drama,
anthropology, art history, computer science, literature, history, library science, sociology, speech
and hearing sciences, accounting, management, finance, economics, and marketing. Also offered
is a course in graduate studies in counseling for seniors and graduate students. Students will
receive six hours of credit and the cost will be $4,399.
      Scotland: Southeastern history professor Peter Petrakis will be on the faculty of the
Edinburgh, Scotland program. The 17-day program is offered from August 3- August 18.
Courses include; history, philosophy, international studies and political science. Also offered is a
course in graduate studies in counseling for under graduate seniors and graduate students.
Students will receive four hours of credit at a cost of $2,999.
      Jamaica: Students can earn four hours of credit in 17 days, from May 13- 30, by
studying abroad in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. For a cost of $2,199, students can study criminal justice
with Southeastern professor Steve Costanza. Other courses offered include; sociology, nursing,
geography, history, music, social work, women's studies, anthropology, economic development
and English literature.
      Austria: One of the largest selections of courses offered during summer 2001 can be

found in the Innsbruck, Austria, program. During the six-week study, from July 2-August 13, a
total of 55 courses will be offered in anthropology, business administrations, theatre, art,
communications, economics, English, finance, geography, German language, history
management, music, philosophy, and political science. The student will receive nine hours credit
at a cost of $3,595.
     Deadlines for applying for the programs vary, but Dranguet said it is never to early to sign
