SLU MAY RECEIVE $1 MILLION FOR TURTLE COVE
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University and U.S. Rep. David Vitter announced
today (Aug. 20) that $1 million for Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station has been included in
appropriation bills currently being considered by Congress.
At the university's annual fall convocation, Vitter said funding for Turtle Cove was added at
his request to the Environmental Protection Agency's Science and Technology Account in the FY
2000 House VA/HUD and Independent Agencies Bill. Congress will vote on the bill when legislators
return from their August recess.
"I'm happy to announce that the funding has been included and I am happy to continue
working on such a vital project," Vitter said.
Southeastern President Sally Clausen said the $1 million will further research and educational
outreach projects at the Pass Manchac research facility and will complement the work of
wetlands ecologist Paul Keddy, who has joined the Southeastern faculty as the Edward G. Schlieder
Endowed Chair in Environmental Studies.
Keddy comes to Southeastern from the University of Ottawa. He has a doctoral degree in
plant ecology from the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a bachelor's degree from York
University in Toronto, Canada. He is the author of several widely used texts.
"Dr. Keddy's presence will immediately enhance the reputation of our program," Nick Norton,
head of Southeastern's biological science department, said. "He is truly an eminent scientist of
international acclaim."
Keddy has indicated that his initial projects as the Schlieder Chair will include conducting
experiments at Southeastern's new outdoor classroom on North Oaks St. and organizing an
international symposium on wetlands conservation. Norton said that Keddy also will be an integral part of
Southeastern's international outreach initiatives.
