SLU TEACHER EDUCATION CENTER RENOVATION FUNDS RESTORED
HAMMOND -- The state Legislature has allocated $6,775,000 to Southeastern
Louisiana University to renovate and expand the Charles Emery Cate Teacher Education Center.
The funding is included in the state capital outlay bill, passed in the final hours of the
legislative session, which adjourned June 10.
"We are extremely pleased that the legislature has provided the funding to meet a crucial
campus need," said President Sally Clausen. "Southeastern prepares more future teachers than
any other Louisiana university. Our Teacher Education Department has seen a 42 percent
increase in student credit hours for teacher preparation in the last five years."
The teacher education program's growth has created a space crisis in the 25-year-old
Teacher Education Center, which houses education classes, faculty offices and the SLU
Laboratory School.
"Our demographics indicate that we will continue to grow in that area since Southeastern
serves four of the north shore's fastest growing parishes, St. Tammany, Livingston, Ascension
and Tangipahoa," Clausen said.
Southeastern has been forced to alleviate the space problem by housing some education
faculty members in trailers.
"I want to thank our entire Florida Parishes delegation, the Southeastern Alumni
Association, the Hammond Chamber of Commerce and concerned local citizens for their support
in obtaining this crucial funding," Clausen said.
