SOUTHEASTERN TO SPONSOR FORUM ON TERRORISM
HAMMOND -- Two Southeastern Louisiana University student organizations are sponsoring a special forum on terrorism and the challenges it presents and changes it has made in everyday America.
“Terrorism, whether domestic or international, is a complex and multifaceted problem. It will challenge our country for years to come,” said Southeastern Criminal Justice professor Ronnie Jones, who will moderate the forum. He said the goal of “Terrorism 2002: Evolving Challenges” is “to put last year's terrorist attacks, and the months ahead, into local context, to give the events and evolving initiatives a degree of perspective.”
The event, sponsored by the Criminal Justice Association and the Sociology Club, is scheduled for 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Student Union Theatre.
Jones said panellists will include law enforcement strategists Mark Oxby, Louisiana State Police deputy superintendent, and Shan Kirk, FBI special agent in New Orleans; bio-terrorism expert Don Krogstad, head of the Tulane University School of Tropical Medicine; and emergency planner Glen Farrar, head of emergency management for St. Tammany Parish.
The program will take the form of a roundtable discussion, with each panelist given time to present his perspective on aspects of the terrorism threat. The presentations will be followed by a question-answer period.
The program is free, but tickets are required. Tickets can be obtained from any member of the sponsoring student associations or from the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department on the third floor of the Southeastern Classroom and Laboratory Building on North Oak Street.
Southeastern students, faculty and staff may obtain tickets through September 16 when remaining tickets will be made available to the general public, Jones said.
