STUDENTS PREPARE FOR FUTURE WITH TRIO DAY
HAMMOND On March 17, more than 1,500 students, staff and volunteers from
around the state participated in TRIO Day at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Participants attended various activities throughout the day, including workshops on
resume writing, interview skills, career exploration, team building activities, health and nutrition,
dress for success and etiquette and manners. The day ended with a TRIO Day Rally, where
students were encouraged to show their TRIO spirit, and a release of over 100 balloons.
"While this was a massive undertaking, it was gratifying that so many projects
participated and responded favorably to the activity," said Ron Abel, director of Educational
Outreach at Southeastern. "The knowledge and spirit that was generated through this day cannot
be measured."
TRIO chapters in attendance included Southeastern, New Orleans Educational Talent
Search, Dillard University, Grambling State University, Loyola University, McNeese State
University, Nichols State University, Southern University, Tulane University, University of New
Orleans, University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Xavier University.
TRIO, a federally funded program, helps youths and veterans prepare for college by
developing college survival skills and career awareness through a variety of activities. Through
course work, services and cultural programs, students receive the skills and motivation needed
for collegiate success.
Co-chairs for TRIO Day were Kimberly Caruso and Abel, both of Southeastern.
