SLU DANCEWORKS PRESENTS 'VOICES' SATURDAY
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Danceworks will present "Voices,"
new works choreographed by Southeastern students, at 7:30 p.m., April 25, in the Pottle Music
Building Auditorium.
The concert is part of the Southeastern Louisiana University Cultural Resource
Management Program's April 22-May 5 "Primavera Student Festival of the Arts." Tickets, $3
general admission and $2 students, can be purchased in the Pottle lobby from 6:30 p.m. until
performance time.
"The new works in Voices stand for individuality," said Southeastern dance professor
Martie Fellom, artistic director of Danceworks. "Each piece articulates personal ideas about life
and society."
Fellom has divised the improvisation structure for "Acts of Bravery," a piece that she said
speaks of the courage and bravery of a child abuse victim, who reveals his secret and begins to
heal and seek justice. Dancers are Brittany Burton and Michelle Cudd of Hammond; Heather
Brown, Jennifer Buck, and Grace Latino of New Orleans; Misty Burns of Harvey; Jennifer
Molero of Chalmette, and Laura West of Baton Rouge. The piece will be danced to the music of
Sarah McLachlan.
Tiffany Reiff, a Danceworks member from Folsom, has choreographed "Never Ending,"
a work based on her original poem and danced to the music of Enigma III. Dancers are Reiff,
Buck, Burns, Jessica Bizette of Baton Rouge, Donya Chavanel of LaPlace and Sharon Larroux of
Metairie.

VOICES CONCERT -- Add One
Lillian Gray of Slidell has contributed two works to the Voices concert. She has
choreographed and will perform "Body of Information," a powerful solo that deals with the
connection between tangible accomplishments and self-identity. Her "Rendevous" is an
intricately woven ensemble that brings to life the theme "We are constantly meeting the same
'different' people throughout our lives." Gray will perform the work along with Larroux, Nichole
Brown of Tickfaw, Carolyn Fulton of New Orleans, Lynne Lawrence of Jefferson and George V.
Traylor of Ponchatoula.
Traylor has choreographed a unqiue piece called "Labels." "It is performed to about 30
seconds of music, then develops into a conversation between the eight dancers. This conversation
is about double standards in society," Fellom said. In addition to Traylor, dancers are Bizette,
Brown, Cudd, Dan Brown of Ponchatoula, Casey Cooper of Boston, Mass., Laura Read of Belle
Chase and Larry Vicari of Robert.
Heather Brown has choreographed "The Presence from Within," which Fellom describes
as "very gentle and peaceful."
"This piece is mainly about dancing from within," Brown explained. "When you are
dancing there is always a deeper meaning that is expressed from the inner soul. If you can reach
from within and find that presence, you realize that it changes you. No longer are you just
moving around in space. You are expressing the 'presence from within' that soothes your pain
and frees you to celebrate joy and emotion."
The choreographer will be joined in the performance by Lawrence, Molero, Michelle
Blancher of Covington, Ashley Boudet and Laura West of Baton Rouge.
Fellom and dance instructor Dana Brewer are artistic directors for the Voices concert;
technical and lighting design is by Pete Pfeil.
For additional information about the concert, call Fellom at 549-2133.
